Brief Abstract:

This baseline study presents one of the first comprehensive socio-economic profiles of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) communities in the KBK districts of Odisha. Based on surveys of 387 respondents, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews, the study examines demographics, livelihoods, gender roles, governance, health conditions, mining practices, and the gemstone value chain. It establishes benchmark evidence for assessing the impacts of COVID-19 and future livelihood interventions in ASM communities.

This study analyses the structure and functioning of the artisanal gold mining value chain in the KBK region of Odisha. It identifies key actors involved in extraction, processing, trading, and marketing while documenting production practices, market linkages, income generation, governance issues, and opportunities for strengthening responsible and sustainable gold value chains.

The study investigates the artisanal gemstone mining sector across the KBK districts, documenting gemstone production systems, supply chains, market structures, pricing mechanisms, and livelihood dependence. It highlights institutional constraints, informal trade practices, and opportunities for value addition, market access, and sustainable livelihood development among indigenous mining communities.

Brief Abstract:

This assessment examines the differential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on women and men engaged in artisanal mining. It explores changes in employment, income, unpaid care responsibilities, health risks, access to services, food security, and decision-making, providing evidence to support gender-responsive policies and inclusive recovery strategies.

This study assesses awareness, knowledge, preparedness, and preventive practices related to COVID-19 among artisanal mining communities in Odisha. It evaluates access to health information, behavioural responses, community resilience, and institutional support while identifying critical gaps in emergency preparedness and public health communication.

The study analyses the socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on artisanal mining households, including disruptions in production, marketing, employment, migration, household income, and food security. It also identifies emerging livelihood opportunities, policy responses, and strategies for strengthening resilience and sustainable recovery within ASM communities.

7. SRADHA. (2021). Training Need Assessment of the ASM Workers: A Study Report.

Brief Abstract:

This training needs assessment identifies knowledge and skill gaps among artisanal and small-scale miners in the KBK districts. The report prioritises capacity-building requirements related to occupational safety and health, environmentally responsible mining, value addition, business development, financial literacy, and market access to enhance sustainable livelihoods and sector formalisation.

These seven studies form SRADHA’s principal contribution to the Delve Global ASM Platform and are widely referenced as foundational evidence on artisanal and small-scale mining in the KBK region of Odisha.
